A recent study has revealed that about 33% of the people diagnosed with throat cancer are said to have infected from the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is said to spread through oral or genital contact.
It is learnt that HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the study asserts important results. The disease came into limelight recently after Actor Michael Douglas reported of his diagnosis.
There are over 100 types of HPV, according to data. Our system offer immunity against these disease most of the times as majority of the people get infected with it at some point of their lives. But there are some aggressive strains that our immune system can't handle.
Among these, the two main to cause cancer are HPV-16 and HPV-18. About 60% of the cervical cancers are caused by HPV-16. Further, it is the cause behind 80% of cancers in the anus and 60% of oral cancers.
"If the HPV vaccine can also protect against oral HPV infections and cancers, then it could have a broader potential protective effect, but we don't have enough research yet to tell us", said Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK's Director of health information.
