3 of 4 reptiles stolen from Calif. museum found

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Three of four reptiles that were swiped from a science museum and thrown together into a garbage bag during a heist were recovered Friday, though a 3-foot-long ball python remained at large, officials said.

The 3?-foot savannah monitor lizard, a 7-foot-long red-tailed boa constrictor and another 3-foot-long ball python were in good condition, said Mary Ellen Wright, the director of the Fresno Discovery Center. Authorities were searching for the missing python in an area frequented by a suspect, who has been arrested.

Wright had been worried about the reptiles' confinement together in the bag "because they are mortal enemies," she said.

"It would be like throwing two pit bulls in a locked room," she added, noting that the monitor lizard has sharp, 2-inch claws.

The reptiles were taken in a robbery that has perplexed museum officials and authorities, who have not released a motive.

Fresno Police Lt. Donald Gross said Friday Devin Michael Madej, 20, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.

The museum's education coordinator, Ian Goudelock, said the burglar didn't appear to be out to intentionally hurt the animals though the museum planned to have the reptiles checked by a veterinarian.

"It's just a strange theft. We're still trying to figure out why," he said. "It does kind of more or less have a happy ending."

Surveillance video showed the burglar broke into the Central California museum sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday, smashed the tanks that held the four reptiles ? worth hundreds of dollars ? and popped them into a garbage bag.

He also went into the center's gift shop and stole children's toys, the phone system and the security monitor, the Fresno Bee reported.

Pennsylvania Launches Adoption Mobile Web site | GantDaily.com

HARRISBURG ? Pennsylvania has launched one of the nation?s first adoption mobile Web sites, providing easier access for those looking to adopt one of the nearly 2,500 children waiting for a permanent home.

Thirty-eight percent of all visits to Pennsylvania?s Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) Web site, adoptpakids.org, come from mobile devices. With the new mobile site, potential adoptive families who visit adoptpakids.org on their smartphone will automatically be directed to the new mobile site.

?People are no longer limited to using their personal desktop computers anymore; instead, they are using their smartphones and tablets to access information,? Department of Public Welfare Acting Secretary Bev Mackereth said. ?Finding a loving and caring home for children who have a goal of permanency can be a long process, and by creating the adoption mobile website we are making it easier for potential families to view children who deserve a forever home.?

Accessing the adoption Web site from anywhere anytime provides convenience to both potential families and case workers. It offers search capabilities for viewing updated and newly added adoption profiles, a photo album of children waiting to be adopted, and information on post-permanency services and how to become a foster or adoptive parent.

SWAN is a broad-based cooperative effort and centralized information and facilitation service funded and overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The network includes county children and youth agencies; juvenile court judges; foster and adoptive parents; private adoption agencies; the Pennsylvania Adoption Exchange; and many others working together on behalf of children who need permanent homes.

The SWAN program serves children in the custody of county children and youth agencies and supports their efforts in expediting permanency services.

For more information on SWAN visit www.adoptpakids.org, call 1-800-585-SWAN (7926) or ?like? SWAN on Facebook.

Feeling better

I have been experiencing some back pain lately, so I went to see my doctor. He immediately recommended that I see a specialist, and get some kind of proper treatment for it. As we agreed, after the consultation, I went to see a specialist at the nearest clinic. The specialist examined me and recommended that I should go to a good Detroit physical therapy. He gave me some further recommendations on how to improve the health of my back and avoid pain. So, I followed his advice and really started feeling better, even after a day. Now I stick to my daily exercise regimen and I feel great.

LG patents RFID-labelled cookbook, attempts to offer more than just another place to spill sauce

LG gets RFIDlabelled cookbook patent to make the fight against food easier

LG is no stranger to mixing together patents and white goods and this time its trying to bridge the gap between recipes and those all-too-often underwhelming results. One of its patents, granted today, outlines the idea of two RF tags that would offer food information and appliance specs, with a reader located on a terminal (say, an oven) that would attempt to bridge the gap between the two. This (likely wireless) device would then connect to a server, which would return operating details for cooking that specified "food information" on your appliance of choice. LG also hints at the ability of expanding the remit of a book when enough info can't be given due to the space limitations of the printed word, hopefully offering up some added value to any compatible future cookbooks. Well, you've got to try and explain those connected fridge and oven costs somehow, right?

New evidence ancient asteroid caused global firestorm on Earth

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A new look at conditions after a Manhattan-sized asteroid slammed into a region of Mexico in the dinosaur days indicates the event could have triggered a global firestorm that would have burned every twig, bush and tree on Earth and led to the extinction of 80 percent of all Earth's species, says a new University of Colorado Boulder study.

Led by Douglas Robertson of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES, the team used models that show the collision would have vaporized huge amounts of rock that were then blown high above Earth's atmosphere. The re-entering ejected material would have heated the upper atmosphere enough to glow red for several hours at roughly 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit -- about the temperature of an oven broiler element -- killing every living thing not sheltered underground or underwater.

The CU-led team developed an alternate explanation for the fact that there is little charcoal found at the Cretaceous-Paleogene, or K-Pg, boundary some 66 million years ago when the asteroid struck Earth and the cataclysmic fires are believed to have occurred. The CU researchers found that similar studies had corrected their data for changing sedimentation rates. When the charcoal data were corrected for the same changing sedimentation rates they show an excess of charcoal, not a deficiency, Robertson said.

"Our data show the conditions back then are consistent with widespread fires across the planet," said Robertson, a research scientist at CIRES, which is a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "Those conditions resulted in 100 percent extinction rates for about 80 percent of all life on Earth."

A paper on the subject was published online this week in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. Co-authors on the study include CIRES Interim Director William Lewis, CU Professor Brian Toon of the atmospheric and oceanic sciences department and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and Peter Sheehan of the Milwaukee Public Museum in Wisconsin.

Geological evidence indicates the asteroid collided with Earth about 66 million years ago and carved the Chicxulub crater in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula that is more than 110 miles in diameter. In 2010, experts from 33 institutions worldwide issued a report that concluded the impact at Chicxulub triggered mass extinctions, including dinosaurs, at the K-Pg boundary.

The conditions leading to the global firestorm were set up by the vaporization of rock following the impact, which condensed into sand-grain-sized spheres as they rose above the atmosphere. As the ejected material re-entered Earth's atmosphere, it dumped enough heat in the upper atmosphere to trigger an infrared "heat pulse" so hot it caused the sky to glow red for several hours, even though part of the radiation was blocked from Earth by the falling material, he said.

But there was enough infrared radiation from the upper atmosphere that reached Earth's surface to create searing conditions that likely ignited tinder, including dead leaves and pine needles. If a person was on Earth back then, it would have been like sitting in a broiler oven for two or three hours, said Robertson.

The amount of energy created by the infrared radiation the day of the asteroid-Earth collision is mind-boggling, said Robertson. "It's likely that the total amount of infrared heat was equal to a 1 megaton bomb exploding every four miles over the entire Earth."

A 1-megaton hydrogen bomb has about the same explosive power as 80 Hiroshima-type nuclear bombs, he said. The asteroid-Earth collision is thought to have generated about 100 million megatons of energy, said Robertson.

Some researchers have suggested that a layer of soot found at the K-Pg boundary layer roughly 66 million years ago was created by the impact itself. But Robertson and his colleagues calculated that the amount of soot was too high to have been created during the massive impact event and was consistent with the amount that would be expected from global fires.

Syrian opposition takes Syria's Arab summit seat

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria's opposition took over the country's seat for the first time at an Arab summit Tuesday in a diplomatic triumph marred by severe divisions in the ranks of the Western-backed opposition alliance.

The opposition's ascension to representing the country at the summit in Qatar, a key backer of the those fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, demonstrated the extent of the regime's isolation two years into a ferocious civil war that the U.N. says has killed an estimated 70,000 people.

In Damascus, the government on Tuesday blasted the Arab League's decision, portraying it as a selling-out of Arab identity to please Israel and the United States.

"The shameful decisions it (Arab League) has taken against the Syrian people since the beginning of the crisis and until now have sustained our conviction that it has exchanged its Arab identity with a Zionist-American one," said an editorial in the Al-Thawra newspaper, a government mouthpiece.

The Qatari ruler, who chaired the summit, said the Syrian opposition deserves "this representation because of the popular legitimacy they have won at home and the broad support they won abroad and the historic role they have assumed in leading the revolution and preparing for building the new Syria."

In a further show of solidarity with anti-Assad forces, the Arab League endorsed the "right of each state" to provide the Syrian people and the Free Syrian Army with "all necessary means to ... defend themselves, including military means."

It was unclear whether the statement would open new weapons channels to fighters. But it would mark a symbolic slap of the U.S. and European allies that have resisted full-scale military aid to the rebels.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby told reporters that the call for "rights" to aid rebels is not an end to diplomatic efforts to solve Syria's crisis, but seeks to provide more "balance" with Assad's superior firepower and aid he is getting from Russia and Iran.

"The right to send more weapons to support the opposition is not an end to political efforts, but this might establish balance between both parties," Elaraby said.

Fighting, meanwhile, raged on in Syria. Rebels barraged Damascus with mortar shells that killed at least three people and wounded dozens in one of the most intensive attacks on the seat of President Bashar Assad's power.

The state news agency also reported that a car bomb exploded near the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Rukneddine, killing three people.

The opposition delegation led by Mouaz al-Khatib, the former president of the main opposition alliance ? the Western-backed Syrian National Coalition ? took the seats assigned for Syria at the invitation of Qatar's emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, while other delegates applauded.

Al-Khatib used the forum to call for a greater U.S. role in aiding the rebels and said he had appealed to Secretary of State John Kerry to consider using NATO Patriot anti-missile batteries in Turkey to help defend northern Syria against strikes by Assad's forces.

Asked about al-Khatib's request for Patriots, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said the deployment of the anti-missile batteries to Turkey was a NATO decision with a clear mandate to protect Turkey.

"We've heard some of this before in private," Ventrell told reporters in Washington. "He's now publicly saying this. But again, that's what the NATO mission is."

A NATO official said "the secretary general of NATO has been very clear since the beginning that NATO has no intention of getting militarily involved with Syria. That remains the same."

"Our current deployment of Patriot systems is a defensive action to protect our ally Turkey," said the NATO official in Belgium on condition of anonymity in keeping with the alliance's regulations.

The diplomatic triumph, however, could not conceal the disarray within the top ranks of the opposition and underlined the splits that continue to plague the opposition, complicating U.S. and Western efforts to try to shape the course of the fight to oust Assad.

Besides al-Khatib, the Syrian delegation included Ghassan Hitto, recently elected prime minister of a planned interim government to administer rebel-held areas in Syria, and two prominent opposition figures, George Sabra and Suheir Atassi.

Al-Khatib announced his resignation on Sunday because of what he described as restrictions on his work and frustration with the level of international aid for the opposition. The coalition rejected the resignation and al-Khatib said he would discuss the issue later and represent the opposition at the Qatar summit "in the name of the Syrian people."

Also, Hitto's election as the head of the interim government was rejected by the opposition's military office, which said he was not a consensus figure. Some members have accused Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood of imposing their will on the Coalition.

Atassi briefly suspended her membership in the coalition after Hitto was elected.

Addressing the gathering, al-Khatib thanked the Arab League for granting the seat to the opposition and lamented the inaction of several foreign governments, which he did not name, toward the Syrian crisis despite the suffering of civilians in his country.

"I convey to you the greetings of the orphans, widows, the wounded, the detained and the homeless," al-Khatib told the gathering in an opulent hall in Doha.

Most of the mortar strikes hit the capital's east side, falling near a school in the Baramkeh neighborhood, the Damascus Hospital, the Law Faculty of Damascus University and the state news agency's own offices.

SANA said one girl and two other civilians were killed.

A government official in Damascus told The Associated Press that four people were killed and 42 wounded. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, and the discrepancy could not immediately be resolved.

Mortar rounds also fell in a number of areas on the city's west side, including the Christian neighborhood of Bab Touma, SANA said.

The agency published photos of a hole in a wall of what appeared to be a school, medics treating blood-stained patients and firemen extinguishing burning cars.

It was not immediately known who fired the mortar shells. Such attacks in the capital have grown more common in recent weeks as rebels have clashed with government troops on the city's east and south sides. While the shelling rarely causes many casualties, it has shattered the aura of normalcy the regime has tried to cultivate in Damascus.

"They think that that through this tactic they can pressure residents to rise up against authorities," said Fayez Sayegh, a member of parliament and a member of the ruling Baath Party. "But on the contrary, this indiscriminate shelling makes people realize that this opposition is nothing but gangs of criminal terrorists."

Meanwhile, anti-regime activists said Syrian troops seized control of a neighborhood in the central city of Homs that is considered a symbol of opposition to Assad's regime.

The Syrian military's recapture of Baba Amr, in Homs, while not strategically important in the civil war, is a symbolic blow to the rebels. The poor, predominantly Sunni neighborhood emerged early in the uprising as a symbol of the rebel movement, first for its protests and later for the armed groups who held it against the regime onslaught.

The seesaw fight for the Homs neighborhood reflects the back-and-forth nature of Syria's civil war. While rebels appear to be gaining ground, their progress is slow and their fighters remain vulnerable to Assad's military superiority.

In other violence Tuesday, the Observatory said that at least 13 charred bodies, including four children and five women, were found on the outskirts of the village of Abil, southwest of Homs city. It said local activists blamed the killings on pro-government gunmen.

The Syrian government does not respond to requests for comment and did not mention the killing in official media.

(AP) ? Syria's increasingly isolated president sent a letter calling for help from leaders of five nations at an economic meeting Wednesday in South Africa to help end his country's civil war.

Bashar Assad's appeal to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa came a day after the Arab League endorsed Syria's Western-backed opposition coalition, allowing it to take the country's seat at a summit in Doha, Qatar. The move drew strong condemnation from Damascus, which warned it will take "appropriate measures" to defend its sovereignty.

Attempts to end Syria's 2-year-old conflict through peaceful means have failed to make progress. The opposition, including the main Syrian National Coalition, says it will accept nothing less than Assad's departure from power while Assad's government has vowed to continue the battle until the rebel forces ? which it refers to as terrorists ? are crushed.

"This requires a clear international will to dry up the sources of terrorism and stop its funding and arming," Assad said in the letter, which was carried by Syrian state media on Wednesday. It was addressed to the leaders at the BRICS forum, which was started in 2009 amid the economic meltdown to chart a new and more equitable world economic order.

Assad said Syria is subjected to "acts of terrorism backed by Arab, regional and Western nations" and asked the leaders to "work for an immediate cessation of violence that would guarantee the success of the political solution."

The opposition's ascension to the Arab League further demonstrated the extent of the regime's isolation two years into a civil war that the U.N. says has killed an estimated 70,000 people.

In a further show of solidarity with anti-Assad forces, the summit in Qatar endorsed the "right of each state" to provide the Syrian people and the rebel Free Syrian Army with "all necessary means to ... defend themselves, including military means."

Following up on the endorsement, the Syrian National Coalition opened what it called its first embassy, raising its green, white and black rebel flag at different site from the now-closed Syrian Embassy in the Qatari capital.

Key opposition figures looked on, including Ghassan Hitto, George Sabra and leader Mouaz al-Khatib, who recently said he was stepping down from his post and criticized the international community for not doing enough to back the anti-Assad forces. Al-Khatib said the SNC will not discuss his resignation, leaving open the option that he could be asked to reverse his decision.

Envoys from the U.S., Turkey, France and other nations that have backed the rebels also attended the ceremony. The new embassy operations are mostly symbolic, but can serve as a base for political initiatives. Many nations in the West, Arab world and elsewhere have declared the SNC the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and have effectively broken diplomatic ties with Assad's government.

Al-Khatib criticized a decision by NATO not to use U.S. Patriot anti-missile batteries based in Turkey to help protect parts of northern Syria from attacks by Assad's military.

But the opposition alliance is marred by severe divisions among its ranks, and often disconnected from the rebel forces fighting inside Syria, so it's not immediately clear how the developments in Qatar would translate on the ground.

The Syrian government said the Arab League's decisions in favor of the opposition "violate in a flagrant way its charter." A statement carried by state-run TV said the Doha summit "encouraged violence, radicalism and extremism that form a danger not only to Syria but for the whole Arab nation and the world."

It said Damascus rejected the Arab summit's decisions and reserved its right "to take appropriate measures to defend its sovereignty and interests of its people." The statement added that Syria will continue the work to "guarantee security and stability and to protect the nation by fighting terrorism and terrorists."

BRICS countries, including Assad's key ally Russia, oppose foreign intervention in Syria and accuse the West of trying to force regime change. Russia, China and South Africa have also voted against U.N. Security Council resolutions on Syria.

At the gathering in the South African coastal resort of Durban, President Jacob Zuma and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, were asked Tuesday whether they would use their influence to persuade Assad to allow unimpeded U.N. humanitarian access across all of Syria's borders, as requested by leading activists from BRICS countries.

Zuma did not answer, while Putin said only that "We will think about it." Earlier, the Russian president said the forum's leaders would jointly "work for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian crisis."

In his letter, Assad criticized European and U.S. sanctions imposed on his regime and urged leaders of the five countries to "exert every possible effort to lift the suffering of the Syrian people that were caused by the sanctions," an apparent reference to shortages of goods and soaring prices.

Syrian activist groups, meanwhile, reported violence in different areas in the country on Wednesday, including Damascus and its suburbs and the southern Quneitra region along the cease-fire line separating Syria from Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees reported clashes and shelling in the Quneitra villages of Bir Ajam, Rasm al-Hawa and Ein el-Darb. The Observatory said rebels overran three army posts near Bir Ajam on Wednesday.

The area near the Golan Heights, a strategic goal of the rebels, has been the scene of heavy clashes for days.

In Israel, the military said it has provided medical care to seven wounded Syrians who arrived at the border of the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights ? the third time Israel has assisted Syrians hurt in the fighting. The two countries are bitter enemies.

The Israeli army said medics treated five Syrians at the border before releasing them back to Syria. It said two other Syrians who were severely wounded were transferred to Israeli hospitals for further treatment.

The army said it will return the wounded Syrians when their hospital treatment ends. Israel did not reveal the identities of the wounded because having been in Israel could endanger them when back in Syria.

Florida Gulf Coast stuns Georgetown 78-68

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? College basketball, meet Florida Gulf Coast.

A school so new it wasn't eligible for the NCAA tournament until last year busted a load of brackets Friday night.

With 24 points from Sherwood Brown and a healthy dose of swagger, FGCU upset second-seeded Georgetown 78-68 in the second round of the South Regional.

"This is our first time being in the NCAA tournament. To actually go out there and win that first game, it means something really special to us," said Brown, who was the first of the players to head toward the Florida Gulf Coast cheering section with several seconds still on the clock.

The Eagles used a 21-2 second-half run to pull away from the Hoyas and then held on in the final minute to become just the seventh No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2.

"It's an unbelievable feeling. We played a very tough team in Georgetown. They have great players. They're a historic school," forward Chase Fieler said. "So being a newer school it's very exciting for us to be able to win a game like that and for the NCAA history. That's exciting and impressive to be a part of that."

Bernard Thompson had 23 points for Florida Gulf Coast, the champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

FGCU (25-10) will play seventh-seeded San Diego State, which beat No. 10 seed Oklahoma 70-55, in the third round on Sunday.

"We decided we can play with anybody and we did," said FGCU point guard Brett Comer, who finished with 12 points,10 assists and just two turnovers.

Comer was part of a play late in the game that almost brought down the house, throwing an alley-oop pass from the corner that Fieler grabbed and threw down with a one-handed dunk.

"Nothing special. It's something me and him have done this year," Comer said. "We knew what was going to happen there. Time and place didn't matter. I knew he'd catch it. You saw the result. The whole place went nuts and we really got the momentum from there."

Said Fieler: "That might be the highest I've ever jumped. We'll have to check the video. Brett has great vision. That was his 10th assist. He just threw it up and I had to go get it."

Just a night before, Harvard ? the nation's oldest university, founded in 1636 ? pulled off a major upset over third-seeded New Mexico. Now, one of its youngest ? FGCU's first student was admitted in 1997 ? has an even bigger one.

The Eagles' monster run gave them a 52-33 lead with 12:28 to play. The Hoyas staged a furious rally to get within 72-68 with 52 seconds left but the Eagles went 6 of 10 from the free throw line to seal it.

"In the second half, we pushed the ball, we got out, we ran, we made shots, got some alley-oop dunks to energize the crowd. I'm very proud of our players," said coach Andy Enfield, whose wife ? supermodel Amanda Marcum ? was shown several times on the arena's big screen.

For those who don't know FGCU, and that was probably plenty of people as of Friday afternoon, Florida Gulf Coast is a state university in Fort Myers with an enrollment of about 12,000 students.

This is FGCU's first tournament and Georgetown's 29th, including the 1984 national championship. But the Eagles did beat Miami earlier this season.

It was another disappointing NCAA exit for the Hoyas (25-7), who have lost to a double-digit seed in their last four appearances. The last time they made it to the second weekend of the tournament was in 2007, when they reached the Final Four.

"I wish I could, trust me, more than anyone on this Earth," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said when asked if he could figure out the losses to lower seeds. "I've tried to analyze it, think about it, look at it, think about what we should do differently and I don't know."

Markel Starks had 23 points for the Hoyas, a tri-champion of the Big East regular season and one of the top defensive teams in the nation.

That didn't seem to bother the Eagles much.

While Georgetown came in allowing 55.7 points per game, FGCU beat that number with 9:22 to play when it led 57-40. The Hoyas allowed opponents to shoot 37.6 percent from the field, fourth-best in the country. The Eagles shot 42.9 percent (21 of 49) and they held the Hoyas to 37.5 percent from the field (24 of 64).

Big East Player of the Year Otto Porter Jr. had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting and 11 rebounds. On this night he couldn't match Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year.

Porter, a sophomore who said he hasn't made a decision yet on whether to return to Georgetown next season, said "winning is hard."

"They got out in transition, and that started their run," he said. "They started knocking down the shot. It's hard when a team is knocking down shots like that."

The FGCU fans who made the trip to Philadelphia were loud all game. The rest of the crowd at Wells Fargo Center joined them during the big run and there's nothing to bring fans together like rooting against a heavy favorite.

"I don't think anybody on our team has ever played in front of that many people," said reserve forward Eddie Murray, who had nine points.

The Eagles charged at their fans when the game ended and ? after some of them shook hands with Hall of Famer and TV analyst Reggie Miller ? it was a celebration that could be felt all the way to back to campus.

The Hoyas used an 8-0 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the first half but that's where their offense went cold ? very cold.

The Eagles closed the half on a 13-4 run as Georgetown missed nine straight shots and committed five turnovers. FGCU took a 24-22 lead on two free throws by Eddie Murray with 26 seconds left. In another example of how out of synch Georgetown was offensively, the Hoyas passed the ball around as the halftime horn sounded, allowed the Eagles to keep their lead.

As the night wound down, one fan yelled at the Eagles to stick around Philly a couple of more days.

"Get a cheese steak, kid! Get a cheese steak!"

The crowd then paid Florida Gulf Coast the ultimate tribute: the E-A-G-L-E-S! Eagles! chant reserved for their favorite NFL team.

U.S. offers reward for capture of two U.S.-born alleged Islamic militants

By Mark Hosenball

(Reuters) - The U.S. government on Wednesday offered rewards of up to $5 million each for information leading to the capture or conviction of two U.S. citizens alleged to have become fighters for the Somalia-based Islamic militant group al Shabaab.

In announcements posted on its "Rewards for Justice" website, the State Department identified the two men as Omar Shafik Hammami, alias Abu Mansour al-Amriki, and Jehad Serwan Mostafa, alias Ahmed Gurey or Anwar al-Amriki. Hammami is a former resident of Alabama and Mostafa a former resident of California, it said.

Hammami is alleged to be a particularly notorious American volunteer for al Shabaab who made propaganda videos for the group, including pictures portraying him as a fighter rather than a mere spokesman, a U.S. law enforcement official said.

The State Department said Hammami moved to Somalia in 2006 and a year later began serving as an al Shabaab propagandist, particularly targeting potential English-speaking recruits through writings, videos and rap songs. Federal authorities in Alabama issued a warrant for his arrest in December 2007.

The government website said that at some point, Hammami led a group of al Shabaab foreign fighters under the supervision of Mostafa.

The website described Mostafa as a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, who had lived in San Diego before moving to Somalia in 2005. He is on the FBI's list of "Most Wanted Terrorists," and in 2009 a warrant for his arrest was issued by federal authorities in San Diego.

Given the long-standing notoriety of the two men, it is unclear why the State Department decided to post reward notices for them now.

U.S. government sources say it is apparent from messages posted on the Internet, including what amounted to a "Twitter war," that in recent months Hammami has fallen out bitterly with al Shabaab's leadership. He has publicly criticized its leaders for allegedly limiting their ambitions to local struggles and in one video expressed concern for his personal safety.

Hammami's whereabouts are presently unknown and he is believed to be on the run from al Shabaab, which may have targeted him for death, said a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Though its ambitions are largely local and the conditions under which its cells operate in the Horn of Africa are believed to be harsh, Somalia-based al Shabaab has been successful in recruiting English-speaking would-be fighters from both the United States and Great Britain, often from local communities of Somali immigrants.

In February 2012, an al Shabaab leader released a video with Ayman al Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's successor as leader of what remains of al Qaeda's original core organization, in which the two groups announced they were affiliating with each other.

Experts say al Shabaab may have a larger contingent of English-speaking foreign fighters than any set of militants other than the rebel groups fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Literally dozens of English-speaking foreign fighters are said by European security sources to have joined anti-Assad cells, including the al-Nusra Front, an Islamic militant faction that the U.S. government has designated as a terrorist group.

Toronto Real Estate Market Watch | Realty Queen TO | Toronto Real ...

bubble1

?

The Toronto real estate market is off to a great start for 2013 as was evident with the January numbers. Now we are 2 1/2 months in and it further confirms how strong the real estate market is doing. Let?s take a look at my Toronto market watch to see what happened during the first 14 days of March:

  • ?3,594 sales reported through the MLS, a 11.5% decline when compared to March 2012
  • Average sale price in the GTA was?..$532,102, up by almost 6% when compared to the same time last year
  • Average price in the 416 area was??$586,655, up by 5.7% when compared to March 2012
  • Average price of condos in Toronto was up by 1.9% over last year
  • Listings were also down in the 416 area when compared to the same time last year by 4.5%

So what does this all mean about our beloved Toronto real estate market? It means we have a tight market out there with low supply and tons of buyers. There is not enough low rise homes to supply the demand of?families?looking for more space and not enough sellers wanting to sell, which might in part ?have something to do with the Toronto Land Transfer Tax. If our government wants to ?cool? the housing market, don?t make anymore mortgage changes, get rid of the Toronto Land Transfer Tax which is just a money grab from the city. Don?t get these numbers twisted into thinking real estate is declining like the media would like you to believe. They love reporting that sales are down by dramatic numbers, but fail to report that prices are rising month after month, but I guess that wouldn?t generate frenzy and traffic to their respective websites.

If sales are down but prices are up, that can only mean 1 thing?.too many buyers and not enough listings, economics 101, supply vs demand

But once again, that?s not a newsworthy story! What is newsworthy though are Realtors underpricing homes in Toronto and creating crazy bidding wars that are being picked up by Toronto papers. One such recent example was a home listed in Wallace-Emerson, NOT the?Junction?Triangle?as was reported by the Star that received 40 offers and sold almost $200,000 over asking price. First off, if that Realtor knew anything about the neighbourhood or at least did a comparable search, he would have seen this home should have not been listed at $419,000, more like $570,000-$590,000. The realtor claimed that his clients advised him to list it so low because it was in shambles and they were afraid buyers would be turned off. Well, as a Realtor, we get hired by our clients to be real estate consultants. Had this Realtor educated his sellers that Wallace-Emerson is an up and coming area with little to no listings available and buyers looking for fixer uppers in this area, he would have had no problem explaining why this house should have been listed at a more realistic price and that the showings would still be abundant. But in this case?scenario The Star wouldn?t have been able report that we are in a housing bubble waiting to burst and the Realtor wouldn?t have gotten his 15 minutes of fame.

We are NOT in a housing bubble, realistic prices are being paid for homes in Toronto, where people are not only buying homes, but also buying into neighbourhoods and lifestyles and that costs money, especially in Toronto. It?s like paying for good seats (real estate) at a concert, the closer you want to be to the stage to have a better view and be right in the action, the more you will have to pay. Same goes for real estate, the closer you want to be to downtown and?amenities?such as the subway, bars, restaurants, grocery stores, etc, the more you will have to pay for that ?seat?.

If Realtors keep underpricing properties then of course it will seem like we are in some crazy bubble with buyers paying 120% over asking price. So what I ask of my dear Realtor friends is do your research, educate your sellers and price accordingly please, don?t give us and our market a bad wrap that it doesn?t deserve. And I ask all the buyers don?t get caught up in the media frenzy and instead look at the cold, hard, facts?.the numbers. The numbers tell us, we have a healthy, but tight market, spring has definitely sprung in the Toronto real estate market regardless if our weather agrees or not.

If you?re a seller and still not convinced why you should sell your home, then click on Why Sell Your Toronto Home Now?and buyers have you been battling it out for homes and not coming out?victorious, then click on How To Win A Bidding War In Toronto

?Amnesty International is biased; sometimes ... - Minivan News

?Amnesty International is biased; sometimes excessive force is absolutely necessary?: Human Rights Ambassador thumbnail

Human Rights Ambassador of the President?s Office ?Sandhaanu? Ahmed Ibrahim Didi has accused Amnesty International of ?fabricating stories about the human rights situation in the Maldives? and of releasing reports about the Maldives without conducting any studies or research.

The Human Rights Ambassador has previously held a press conference declaring that there ?should be no opposition parties?, and that ?I cannot believe, in fact, I do not at all want to believe, that there can be anyone with views opposing that of the government.

He has also labelled the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) an ?unlawful organisation which commits terrorist activities and attempts to undermine the powers of the state?, and called for the Elections Commission to dissolve it, on the grounds that ?they shouldn?t be allowed to exist.?

In a number of letters to the NGO obtained by Minivan News, the Human Rights Ambassador initially spoke highly of the international human rights NGO, crediting it for the freedoms of assembly and expression currently constitutionally guaranteed to the country?s citizens.

?All Maldivians, especially me, should be very thankful to Amnesty. They helped me immensely back when I was jailed. I must say that, if not for Amnesty, we might still be stuck in an extension of that long 30 year regime [former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom?s administration]. Back then, we did not even have the rights guaranteed to a German frog. That?s right, even the German frog has won a court case which gave him the right to scream as loudly as he likes,? Ibrahim Didi said at a press briefing held on Wednesday.

?It was an initiative and pressure of Amnesty International that led to Maldives signing the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights). When vocal youngsters on the street yell ?baaghee? [traitor] and vulgarities at me, I don?t say anything and instead smile at them because they are using a right that I guaranteed for them,? Ibrahim Didi said.

?But when these youthful protesters claim that the freedom of expression they use is a right they ensured for themselves, then they are simply wrong. I did it. I got those rights for us. It is I, who achieved the guarantee of these rights, who is now here is the Human Rights Ambassador,? Ibrahim Didi stated.

?Now, going back to the issue, although Amnesty was of great help, now they are being the exact opposite. Now they are acting wrongfully,? he said.

?Amnesty?s Abbas Faiz claims to have conducted studies, but actually they are righting these reports without having conducted any formal research or studies. They are causing so much trouble in the country,? the ambassador alleged.

?I am deeply saddened to utter such words against Amnesty, words which will doubtless upset them. However, this is my responsibility as the Human Rights Ambassador placed in the President?s Office. I have also twice written directly to Amnesty about these concerns,? he stated.

Ibrahim Didi did not clarify whether or not he had received responses to the letters sent to the international human rights civil society. He shared copies of the letters with the media, the first sent on October 30, 2012 titled ?Ref: Police violence as ex-president is arrested on 8th October in Fares Mathoda? and the second sent on March 7, 2013 titled ?Ref: Former President?s arrest ?selective justice? ? Amnesty International.?

?Amnesty report extremely biased?

In a letter sent to the NGO regarding the first arrest of former President Mohamed Nasheed to present him to court in October 2012, Ibrahim Didi called Amnesty?s statements regarding the issue ?incorrect and extremely biased?, stating they were issued ?blindly without any research.?

The letter then aims to explain why the detention of Nasheed was necessary, stating that it was in relation to the former President having ?violated the country?s constitution several times?. The letter, however, only offered as example the contentious case of Nasheed?s detention of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed, calling the detention ?the most ruthless action ever conducted by the military against a citizen of the country in the known history?.

Ibrahim Didi also dismissed any allegations of executive involvement in the arrest of Nasheed, insisting that ?the judiciary of the state operates independently.?

He then denied the allegations made in the Amnesty report, repeatedly stating that the NGO had ?failed to conduct sufficient research?.

?When [Nasheed] was arrested and there was no confrontation between Nasheed?s supporters and the police. The ex-foreign Minister did not attack the police, for him to be kicked and pepper sprayed on his face as Amnesty?s report says. There was clearly no resistance displayed to use pepper spray in the whole operation. The whole operation was recorded on video and televised on local media,? he claimed in the letter.

?The source of Amnesty?s report was based on an eyewitness and without further investigation it was broadcast, tarnishing the Maldivian police integrity. Hence, we strongly urge Amnesty International to refrain from such exploitations without fully probing into facts as it leads to destruction of peace and harmony in the country.?

The Human Rights Ambassador, while dismissing allegations of police brutality, also offered justification for the police actions of February 8, 2012:

?We vehemently deny any accusation of police brutality during President Mohamed Waheed?s period (since February 2012) but on 8th February the police had to use force to disperse an aggressive Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters who were armed with long sticks and bricks in their hands to batter the police force. And we would also like to note that the police personnel and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel were extremely exhausted on that day while there was no proper command and control formed after Nasheed?s resignation on 7th February sparking chaos in the whole country.?

In conclusion, Ibrahim Didi wrote that Amnesty International seemed to be highly concerned of human rights violations during Gayyoom?s regime, adding ?it appears Amnesty International is indirectly rejecting any process of legality as those allegations against Maumoon not being investigated yet.?

Amnesty International had at the time released a report titled ?The Other Side of Paradise: A Human Rights Crisis in the Maldives?, chronicling human rights abuses in the country since the controversial transfer of power in February 2012.

Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Jameel Ahmed had responded to the report at the time, saying the NGO had failed to seek any comments from the government. He did not, however, appear to dispute the contents of the report.

?Sometimes excessive force is absolutely necessary?

In a more recent letter, Ibrahim Didi once again accuses Amnesty of bias, stating:

?We strongly deny that the filing a court case against Nasheed is a ?selective justice? being served here as Amnesty International suspects,? the letter read.

?Former President Gayyoom?s rule has been also investigated for three long years during Nasheed?s 3 year term,? Ibrahim Didi wrote. ?Apart from the wages and office expenses a Singapore law firm was hired for 25 million US dollars.?

?So we regret to say that Amnesty?s comments come without any research as usual and the statements are biased, favouring MDP. It looks as it a MDP statement. If one is a little bit fair of the comments of the situation, they would blame on the burning properties, attacking of the peaceful pedestrians in their so-called peaceful demonstrations,? Ibrahim Didi alleged.

?Moreover MDP militant parliamentarians behaved inside the parliament house like thugs, destroying government properties and attacking security forces. They have played hooliganism before foreign dignitaries inside the chambers. In this civilized world no one could see such violent scenarios even in African subcontinent,? he continued.

Ibrahim Didi further stated that contrary to what MDP might say, their protests were not peaceful and hence ?to stop this kind of violent protests, sometimes excessive force is absolutely necessary to minimize damages.?

He further labels MDP?s demonstrations as ?illegal?, adding ?If these demonstrations are legal and peaceful, we the whole Maldivians can come out and demonstrate at any time. Some can come out to demonstrate to hang Nasheed and his power clique for robbing the state wealth, shrinking our economy.?

Ibrahim Didi states that the trial against Nasheed is not the only charge against him, but rather ?the beginning of a series?.

Stating that ?we always believe Nasheed is a mentally ill person?, Ibrahim Didi lists out a number of accusations against the former President. Among these, he states that ?Nasheed used state TV and Radio to propagate his party?s agenda? and that ?MDP activists along with chairperson ?Reeko? Moosa Manik and Nasheed?s right hand lady, Mariya Ahmed Didi had formed Kangaroo Court and conducted rulings on other citizens.?

Ibrahim Didi then refers to the controversial transfer of power of February 7, 2012, saying Nasheed was either ?mentally ill? or ?intoxicated and his brain was not functioning properly? on the day.

Ibrahim Didi stated that the Commission of National Inquiry?s findings and the HRCM report proves that Nasheed had resigned voluntarily and that ?this is not a disputed resignation at all as Amnesty says.?

The Ambassador said that he ?wonders why [Nasheed]?s foreign friends love him so much?, and stated he knew why the local ones did.

?They have altogether robbed the state wealth and sold government assets at cut rates and treasured them for future and now looking forward for some more. Now all these criminal are on the street, the drug addicts and the drunkards. Together they are trying to evade from the courts verdict. This has nothing to do with political instability in the country,? he accused.

?The country is not in a red alert situation here because of some paid street hooligans who shout on the roads and attack innocent civilians.?

Following the arrest of Nasheed earlier this month, Amnesty International stated the arrest an example of ?selective justice?, which ?highlights the failure of the Maldives authorities to investigate other serious human rights abuses in the country.?

Male lions use ambush hunting strategy

Mar. 18, 2013 ? It has long been believed that male lions are dependent on females when it comes to hunting. But new evidence suggests that male lions are, in fact, very successful hunters in their own right. A new report from a team including Carnegie's Scott Loarie and Greg Asner shows that male lions use dense savanna vegetation for ambush-style hunting in Africa.

Their work is published in Animal Behavior.

Female lions have long been observed to rely on cooperative strategies to hunt their prey. While some studies demonstrated that male lions are as capable at hunting as females, the males are less likely to cooperate, so there were still questions as to how the males manage to hunt successfully. The possibility that male lions used vegetation for ambushing prey was considered, but it was difficult to study given the logistics and dangers of making observations of lions in densely vegetated portions of the African savanna.

Loarie and Asner, working with Craig Tambling from the University of Pretoria, combined different types of technology to change the game.

First the authors created 3-D maps of the savanna vegetation using laser pulses that sweep across the African plains. They did this using a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanner mounted on the fixed-wing Carnegie Airborne Observatory (CAO) aircraft. They combined these 3-D habitat maps with GPS data on predator-prey interactions from a pride of seven lions in South Africa's Kruger National Park to quantify the lines of sight, or "viewsheds," where lions did their killing in comparison to where they rested.

They found that while a preference for shade caused both male and female lions to rest in areas with dense vegetation and similarly short viewsheds during the day, the real difference between males and females emerged at night. Female lions both rested and hunted under the cover of darkness in areas with large viewsheds. But at night, male lions hunted in the dense vegetation, areas where prey is highly vulnerable, but which researchers rarely explore. The scientific results show that ambushing prey from behind vegetation is linked to hunting success among male lions, despite lacking the cooperative strategies employed by female lions in open grassy savannas.

"By strongly linking male lion hunting behavior to dense vegetation, this study suggests that changes to vegetation structure, such as through fire management, could greatly alter the balance of predators and prey," Loarie said.

The authors emphasized that their findings should be confirmed in other studies throughout Africa's savannas. Nevertheless, these results could have major implications for park management, which is often heavily involved with manipulating vegetation.

"With large mammals increasingly confined to protected areas, understanding how to maintain their habitat to best support their natural behavior is a critical conservation priority," Asner said. This study highlights the rapidly evolving role of high-tech measurements for never-before-undertaken research in geographically complex and often dangerous conditions. Three-dimensional imaging of ecological habitats by the CAO, along with GPS tracking of species inside those habitats, has opened new doors to understand how species interact with one another throughout their native environments, doors that couldn't have been opened without these technological advances.

China Hacking: New Premier Says US Should Avoid 'Groundless Accusations'

BEIJING, March 17 (Reuters) - China and the United States should avoid "groundless accusations" against each other about cyber-security and hacking into each other's computer systems, newly installed Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday.
Li's comments, at the close of China's annual meeting of parliament and a day after he assumed the premiership, come amid a war of words between Beijing and Washington over cyber-attacks and national security.
A U.S. computer security company said last month that a secretive Chinese military unit was likely behind a series of hacking attacks mostly targeting the United States.
Responding to a reporter at a news conference, Li said he "sensed the presumption of guilt" in the question.
"I think we should not make groundless accusations against each other, and spend more time doing practical things that will contribute to cyber-security," Li said.
"This is a worldwide problem. In fact, China itself is a main target of such attacks," he said. "China does not support, indeed we are opposed to, such activities."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will press China to investigate and stop cyber-attacks on U.S. companies and other entities when he visit China this week, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.
President Barack Obama also raised U.S. concerns about computer hacking in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, the same day Xi took office.

Restaurant Review: Beer Kitchen | The University News

Westport dive serves up Americana-style food, boasts extensive drinks list

Walking in from the cold, I was immediately greeted by a smiling hostess and the warm, relaxing ambiance at Beer Kitchen, 435 Westport Road.

I was seated in the middle of the dining area, and my server quickly took the drink order and returned within a few short minutes.

At this point, I was feeling positive, but when the server brought back the first drink order?? water and lemon??I was somewhat disappointed that she only returned with half of my request?? the lemon was missing! Not a huge deal, but it gave a slightly negative impression.

An assortment of ?feel-good? snacks and starters on the menu include deviled eggs, pretzel twists, black-eyed pea hummus and nachos.

As tempting as they seemed, I decided to skip the snacks and starters. Instead, I decided to choose from the multiple styles of hand-cut and cheese fries as an appetizer. There are also seven styles of dipping sauces, so there is little worry of choosing the same thing twice.

After ordering a basket of Belgian Style fries with Sweet Thai Chili sauce, I decided that I would skip my love for breakfast entrees in the evening, at the request of the server, and build my own macaroni and cheese. It sounded too good to be true, but it does exist! The macaroni and cheese runs $11, but even for a student, this meal was worth it money-wise.

There are also build-your-own omelet and lunch box sections, where patrons can choose an appetizer and main course for less than $10. Patrons may select from a variety of meats and veggies, and the choices are anything but boring.

This was a meal suited for a hungry student, like myself, who tries to buy economical meals where leftovers will be an option.

Beer Kitchen also has a great happy hour options and prices, including beer, cocktails and food.

At an establishment like Beer Kitchen, it?s known that you?re getting yourself into something good, as they say, the minute you walk in and are greeted by multiple hanging tap handles enticing patrons from the dining area.

Not a beer drinker? The drink choices are also fantastic and not too steeply priced.

The only problem I had with the meal is that it was definitely not something you want to eat if you have things to do later on ? it will knock you out!

Perhaps one of the burgers or salads would have been better choices, considering that I passed out from a carbohydrate takeover once I left.

Overall, things went smoothly; the Americana-style food, delectable beer and drink lists were enough to entice another round.

Yes, when Carr went to Walmart to return the printer last week, he didn't have a receipt. Not only was it missing the paper tray and installer CD, there was a sheet of paper in it ? with two $100 bills printed on it.

The employees at the store in the Village of Lake Hallie, Wis. were trying to help Carr as best they could, but he wasn't doing much to help himself, insisting on a refund even after the fake bills were discovered.

When a clerk handed him the piece of paper he crumpled it up, asked another clerk to throw it away, and then kept pushing for a refund, even trying to get half price for the printer, Lake Hallie Police Chief Cal D. Smokowicz told NBC News Monday. Walmart employees called police after Carr became even more insistent when the store said it would not take back the printer, and he refused to leave.

"He continues to stay there to try to barter with Walmart employees, saying he was willling to accept a lower price," Smokowicz said.

Smokowicz and another officer responded to the call, and when they got there and tried to arrest Carr, 37, he resisted and then tried to leave the store, the only Walmart in the town of 6,700 residents.

"A further search at the jail revealed three additional counterfeit $100 bills on the subject?s person," the police said in a statement. Carr was charged with attempted theft by fraud, forgery and resisting arrest. Turned out, he was already wanted on two felony warrants for armed robbery and burglary from nearby St. Croix County.

The police chief said the piece of paper left in the printer had a hole cut in it where it was obvious a third fake $100 bill had been "cut out very carefully."

The fakes weren't great. "I've seen much better," Smokowicz said.

The paper used to print the fakes was a heavy-weight printer paper, and the colors, "were just a little bit off," a little too blue.

"In a dark bar-type setting, they probably would have passed, but under the bright lights of a bank or a convenience store, somebody would have caught it," the chief said.

U.S. bills are printed on paper made from a special fiber that uses cotton, silk and linen.

Counterfeiting is no laughing matter, despite this inept effort. The Secret Service, which investigates counterfeiting, notes on its website, that "new forms of counterfeiting are on the rise. One reason for this is the ease and speed with which large quantities of counterfeit currency can be produced using modern photographic, printing and computer equipment."

The Secret Service is interviewing a man who had accompanied Carr to the store, Smokowicz told NBC News, but the man is not believed to be involved in counterfeiting, and is cooperating with law enforcement.

Whether Carr makes a "dumbest criminals" list remains to be seen.

"You go to a Walmart with a printer to return and no receipt, with your counterfeit bills still lodged in it, and you want to dicker with the clerks to get half price back, when you have warrants out for you," Smokowicz said. "There are a few lessons here about not drawing attention to yourself."
